Anna C. is a 22-year-old graduate of Colorado State University. She shared some thoughts with us about her GradMed experience. Her answers to our questions are below.

Can you tell us a little bit about your claim?

My claim started with me falling off of a 45-foot cliff. I fell into a crack and had to be airlifted to a trauma center. I broke my back and shattered my leg. I had to have one surgery on my leg and spent 7 days in the hospital. I then spent three months convalescing, with regular doctor's appointments and rehab.

How are you doing today?

Today, I've moved across the globe and recovery is going well. It's been 8 months, and I still limp quite a bit, but pain decreases everyday and functionality increases. I expect to reach my maximum recovery within half a year.

What was your overall experience with GradMed?

GradMed was great from the get-go. I called them while still in the hospital, and they told me not to worry about anything. Because my claim was so catastrophic, basically everything was covered. I'm still not sure about the helicopter bill, but my contact at GradMed has been in regular contact with the claims department on my behalf.

Why did you decide to purchase GradMed in the first place?

I decided to purchase GradMed because I was a recent college graduate with a job that offered no health coverage. I describe myself as accident prone, so having a lapse in coverage wasn't an option. GradMed allowed me to be covered without having a long-term commitment and gave me the opportunity to look for work suited to me, instead of having to rush into a career I didn't want just so I'd have health coverage.

What do you think would have/may have happened if you hadn't had GradMed coverage?

My bills from my accident were right around a quarter of a million dollars. I assume the hospital would have absorbed some of that debt, but I'd be spending the next decade or so working to pay off one night of bad luck.

What other options (other than GradMed) did you consider/explore?

I looked at the few options endorsed by my university (including GradMed). Most of them required a longer or shorter contract, and GradMed was the easiest for a recent grad to pay for.

Would you recommend GradMed to others?

I'd recommend GradMed because they covered my catastrophe, and the staff has been amazing. They called me regularly just to check up on me after my accident and were really conscientious.

How was the staff or customer service group to work with?

My direct correspondent was amazing. She would call me, she has a picture of me at her office, and she knows and remembers all the details of my accident. She always tries to help me when it comes to claims and really seems to care about my recovery. I can always call her, and she calls right back if she's unavailable. The staff has been excellent.
